The Safe Harbor lighthouse seal is your beacon for the world's first and only proactive, large scale test for leading indicators of seafood safety.

Safe Harbor Certification is made possible by the proprietary technologies of Emeryville-based Micro Analytical Systems, Inc. (MASI), and distributed in the Bay Area by locally-owned
Royal Hawaiian Seafood.

Safe Harbor Certified seafood is available to all restaurants and retailers in the Bay Area, but is currently served only at the dozens that prominently display the Safe Harbor lighthouse seal. Click for the most up-to-date listing of Safe Harbor merchants near you.

Why it's important

Study after study shows how healthy seafood can be relative to other types of food - it's low in saturated fat, high in protein and omega 3 fatty acids, and contains many important vitamins and minerals.

However, at a time of unprecedented concerns about mercury, radiation, industrial pollutants, use of hormones, and unregulated aquaculture, the government inspects less than 3% of seafood sold in this country (versus 100% of beef and poultry).
